CURRENTLY CASTING ROLES OF HENRY AND DASH!
We are launching a nationwide search to cast two leading roles in the new musical Interstate, written by award-winning writers Melissa Li and Kit Yan, which will be produced at Mixed Blood Theatre in Minneapolis in March 2020. The show is an inspiring tale of an Asian-American queer band on their first national tour and the ways in which it touches the life of a young gender-questioning teen living in small-town Kentucky.
description of roles
Henry is a South Asian transgender teenager living in a small, isolated, Kentucky town. Inspired by his favorite band Queer Malady, he starts a blog documenting his gender journey, hoping to find answers to his own struggles. For most of the show, Henry has not yet started taking testosterone.
The actor must be of South Asian descent (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Nepalese, Bhutanese, Sri Lankan, Maldivian, Burmese, or mixed), and must self-identify as transgender, genderqueer, gender non-conforming, non-binary, or gender questioning. The person we're looking for does not need to be a professional actor. Range: Mezzo-soprano. (See note on vocal ranges.)
Dash is a transgender Asian-American spoken word performer who goes on his first road trip with his best friend Adrian navigates love, family, and masculinity while connecting with his community. He has been taking testosterone for many years.
The actor must identify as East Asian, South Asian, or Southeast Asian, and must self-identify as transgender, genderqueer, gender non-conforming, non-binary, or gender questioning. The person we’re looking for does not need to be a professional actor. Range: Tenor. (See note on vocal ranges.)
Note on vocal ranges
Though the music is currently written for a singer with a “mezzo” range for Henry and a “tenor” range for Dash, we recognize the gender limiting language of voice and musical theater, and encourage people of all unique vocal ranges to submit.
Performances & Rehearsal
Interstate will run for 23 performances in March 2020 at Mixed Blood Theatre in Minneapolis (exact dates TBD). Rehearsals will take place starting February until performances.
Compensation & Travel
This is a paid role, under an Equity contract, which also covers travel and housing for the duration of rehearsal and performances for an actor coming from outside Minneapolis.
All non-union actors in this production will be eligible to join the Actors Equity Association for their participation in this production.
how to submit
You do not have to be part of the Actors Equity Union to submit for this role. We encourage everyone who fits the above description to apply.
Please submit the following to interstateNYMFcasting@gmail.com:
a photo or headshot
at least one video or link to a singing sample
a performance resume (optional)
Representation matters, and we believe it is important for trans people to see their experiences portrayed accurately by other trans and genderqueer people. Please circulate this widely to your friends, communities, and networks. We understand this isn’t an easy role to cast, but we’re determined to find the talented trans/queer artists that we know exist.
