A New Musical

Interstate NYMF Logo.jpg

We are launching a nationwide search to cast a leading role in the new musical Interstate, written by award-winning writers Melissa Li and Kit Yan, which will be part of the New York Musical Festival (NYMF) this summer. The show is an inspiring tale of an Asian-American queer band on their first national tour and the ways in which it touches the life of a young gender-questioning teen living in small-town Kentucky.

description of role

Henry is a South Asian transgender teenager living in a small, isolated, Kentucky town. After video-blogging about his favorite band Queer Malady and documenting the beginning of his gender journey on YouTube, he decides to set out on a quest to meet his heroes in person, hoping to find answers to his own struggles.

The actor must be of South Asian descent (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Nepalese, Bhutanese, Sri Lankan, Maldivian, Burmese, or mixed), and must identify as transgender, genderqueer, gender non-conforming, or non-binary. The person we're looking for does not need to be a professional actor.

vocal range

Though the music is currently written for a singer with a “mezzo” vocal range, we recognize the gender limiting language of voice and musical theater, and encourage people of all unique vocal ranges to submit.

Performances & Rehearsal

Interstate will run for five (5) performances from July 9 - 15 at the New York Musical Festival (exact dates TBD). Rehearsals will take place starting mid-June until performances.

Compensation & Travel

This is a paid role, under an Equity contract, which also covers travel and housing for the duration of rehearsal and performances for an actor coming from outside NYC.

aea eligibility

Under the special Equity contract for NYMF, all non-union actors in this production will be eligible to join the Actors Equity Association for their participation in this production.

how to submit

You do not have to be part of the Actors Equity Union to submit for this role. We encourage everyone who fits the above description to apply.

Please submit the following to

  • a photo or headshot
  • at least one video or link to a singing sample
  • a performance resume (optional)

Representation matters, and we believe it is important for trans people to see their experiences portrayed accurately by other trans and genderqueer people. Please circulate this widely to your friends, communities, and networks. We understand this isn’t an easy role to cast, but we’re determined to find the talented trans/queer artists that we know exist.
